Men who abuse women have severely impacted several people close to me and, in 2004, resulted in the violent death of the 10-year old young daughter of a friend of mine and her toddler nephew. It was devastating for the family and for me.
As men, to help prevent the abnormal development that contributes to producing abusers, we need to mentor young men with whom we are in contact, take responsibility for the welfare of our own partners and children and be positive and present role models for our children. We must teach by word and example that a “real man” unselfishly honors womanhood and also honors rather than debases himself.
We must also help our young women and young men to recognize and expect positive relationships and to be aware of the signs of abusive potential partners.
