This “Power of Purple” luncheon program will highlight the lives and work of men in our community who
choose to take a stand against domestic violence and work to fight the gender-inequality stereotypes that hurt boys, men, girls and women in our culture. The program will include presentations for all of the honorees, a film presentation, and special entertainment.
The program is presented in conjunction with the “I CHOOSE” campaign, launched by the Connecticut Coalition against Domestic Violence (CCADV) which focuses on engaging boys and men to make positive life choices that don’t involve violence. The campaign stems from the idea that violence is a choice, and with the right mentors and the right tools, boys can choose to rise above domestic violence.
Long-time volunteer, William Wernau, who launched the “I CHOOSE” campaign with Safe Futures will be honored posthumously. Other honorees include: Brian Bartelli – Bartelli Home Improvement; Kevin Barney – Mashantucket Police Department; Chief Patrick Daley – Norwich Police Department; James Epps – Dominion Energy; Dr. Michael Graner – Superintendent, Groton Public Schools; Ignacio Heredia – Planned Parenthood – New London; Dr. William Horgan – Regional Medical Director Backus Hospital; Frederick Douglass Knowles – Associate Professor Three Rivers Community College; Chief Brett Mahoney – Waterford Police Department; Chief Jeffrey Nixon – Groton Long Point and Safe Futures Board; Roger Parkman – Safe Futures Board; Juan Roman – New London Athletics; Sergeant Richard Sawyer – Groton Town Police; Patrick Sheehan-Gaumer – Safe Futures Engaging Men Educator; Pastor Sam Spatafore – Thames River Church – New London; Chief Darren Stewart – Stonington Police Department; and Captain Brian Wright – New London Police Department.
